Bad news but he died in an abseiling accident last week.
Using the loop between leg loops and waist loop and it snapped whilst descending a route in Yosemite.

Shame - after all his Freestyle exploits! Strange thing to happen with a guy of his experience??

There's been quite a thread (I haven't read it all) about this over on UK Climbing...
[externer Link]
According to news reports, "The part that broke, called the belay loop, is designed to be the strongest part of the climbing harness, but Hewett, 34, said Skinner's harness was old".
IMHO, depending on the harness design, the belay loop may _not_ be the strongest part - the tie-in loop(s) is/are. However, the loop _is_ generally used to attach the friction device during an abseil. I guess (I wasn't there) that a Prussik loop backup might have caught the failure if it had been attached to a solid part of the harness.
No doubt Peter Clinch will have a view on this?

It's worth the ignoring the usual backbiting over on rec.climbing if you haven't seen the thread entitled "Todd Skinner killed in accident".
It contains this poignant link to testimonies over on supertopo: [externer Link]
If you don't have the courage to read all of that, the failure was indeed the belay loop, and the speculated cause was excessive wear (his partner states that he had ordered new harnesses, but they were still in the post).
My hairy 7yo harness (not in active service but still in the cupboard) gets chopped and binned next time I see it.
