climbing in Jordan

Hello NG,

I'm planing a climbing trip to Jordan's Wadi Rum in November, and there
are some questions, where I wonder if someone knows:

1. Wadi Rum: is it necessary to bring and sleep in a tent (when you are
out in the dessert) because of bugs, scorpions or snakes? And how about
sandstorms, are they common?

2. Trekking in the Wadi Rum area (and to Aqaba): it is a approx. 70 km
trek, and we wonder if there are dwells on the way, which we can use and
how do we find them and how do we get the water out of it? Or where do I
get information about getting water in this areas? We don't want to
start carrying more than 6 kg water each with us.

3. How about the small village of Wadi Rum, is there nice accommodation
beside the rest house? And is it possible to buy food in the village, or
do we have to go to the junction for food stores?

Thanks for help,
Jules Bach

Our trip report from March 2001 is at

logistics etc.

And...

It gets very cold at night, and while we were there there was one sandstorm
which would have been very unpleasant without a tent.

Sorry, can't help you with this (but I agree about not carrying a lot of
water).

When we were there, over six years ago, it was possible to rent a tent
behind the Rest House, and there were also other places to stay. However I
believe that there are more restrictions now. You could certainly buy food,
and there were also restaurants (but don't expect a gourmet experience).

HTH,

Thanks, Jules, I've updated our site with that excellent link (which is an
updated version of Ruth Caswell's previous site) and also the one from Rum
Guides [externer Link] externer Link. Öffnet in neuem Fenster .

Have a good trip!
