You can still have CO2 output savings whilst needing backup power stations for the times when wind turbines aren't generating much.

Because you then need 100s of miles of power pylons staggering across the country to where the demand is (where the people are)??

Living in Yorkshire where the coalfields are/were we have lots of National Grid lines. And you think that they can simply hook up a turbine to an existing line? Not that simple I'm afraid, even if you decided to build a turbine slap bang next door to a power station....

OP - Petition about 'intrusive' wind farms.
Previous comment - 100's of miles of pylons.
Your comment - existing pylons not intrusive.
My comment.... linking existing pylons and new wind farms <> possible in all cases so more 'intrusive' pylons required which increase industrialisation of the countryside, matching up nicely with the petition....

ROTFLMAO Electricity can not be stored.
Some day it may be possible to turn the power into hydrogen and transport that, but it is impossible ATM. -- Dave Fawthrop <dave hyphenologist co uk> 20,000 free e-books at Project Gutenberg! [externer Link] For Yorkshire Dialect go to [externer Link] \ [externer Link] [externer Link]

Please do! I'd be much happier with them than with a conventional power plant. There's a whole 11 acres opposite my place, you can put as many as you like there.

AOL. I like them. One of the most stunning views I have ever seen or photographed, the kind that settles in your mind, is wind turbines in southern California. Sheer beauty, power of nature utilised in the landscape.
What a pity the petition doesn't have an option for people to vote against it.

Is it a petition _for_ wind-farms because they're much better than coal-fired stations or a petition _against_ wind-farms bceause hyporitcal whingers don't want them in their own back-yard? ;)
It's a bit like mobile towers really. "Reception at my house sucks! Why can't they fix it?" vs "I don't want an ugly cancer-causing mobile phone tower near me!". Can't have your cake and eat it too. :)

Funny, I find those wanting wind farms incredibly hypocritical.

Try reading it. It's a petition against inappropriately sited windfarms. Like the one on Lewis, which apart from the affect it will have locally, will require a line of huge pylons through the middle of the Highlands to transport the power south. Or rather, transport 75% of it, the rest will be lost.
I want wind farms in my own back yard please. I don't want them to ruin what little wild land we have left. And it's not as if we won't still need conventional power stations for when there isn't any wind.

It's only like mobile phone towers if they're proposing on erecting them on top of our hills and mountains. Which they're not - yet.

Yes, I think onshore wind farms are generally a pretty stupid idea, and especially the giant ones proposed for Scotland, since the power isn't needed up there and the super-grid connection to where it is needed (basically the south-east of England) will (a) cost a fortune and (b) be another environmental catastrophe.
We've been successful locally in stopping (pending Appeal) a scheme in an area which is Green Belt, and also carries other protective designations including SSSIs. Our campaign is at [externer Link] in case anyone else here is fighting such monsters.
Getting even further off topic, there's another Petition about the proposed ID scheme at [externer Link]
