open. The locking teeth on the snap are completely undamaged, and the
snap spring has gone, so it's clear what happened: it was overloaded
while not only unlocked but having fallen open. Since it was found in
the street rather than on a crag I suspect it was being used to tow a
vehicle or secure a crane load.
By coincidence I happen to have a good clean version of exactly the
same carabiner, bought about 45 years ago. For anyone interested in
the details of this deformation, here's a photograph of the two side
by side. It's a big (megabytish) image, so that all the detail can be
seen. It's a nicely clean deformation, what engineers would call
a graceful failure. (Not what happens to aluminium carabiners :-)

I've got one like that that i found under el cap. it was a plain jane
Al D, bent open under load with the gate open. the gate popped through
under its spring tension to the inside of the biner, and then the load
apparently came off without breaking the spine. now the gate is stuck
inside the biner.
im trying to figure out something to do with it. not going to be
bailing off that puppy anytime soon, and its no good for keys;)
hammock. it'll be great for a hammock.
