| | Auf diese Nachricht antworten! | Hi, I'm a longstanding rec.climbing participant who never looks at u.r.c. A search through Google Groups was only partially helpful, so I thought I'd post a question here.
I'll be in Wales for business next week and can stay over on Saturday, 2 September, which I would love to do if I can spend the day climbing.
I'll be staying in Cardiff, with no car and very little gear. Are there any reasonable options for spending a single day somewhere? I'm not averse to hiring a guide to maximize the limited time.

Hi Steven,
I have only four pieces of climbing advice for you:
1. The WICC is excellent:
[externer Link] evisitorinformation.htm
I have found a random partner there on a Friday evening [hello and thank you to Brian born 25/9], but it is out in the wilds (probably 50 quid return taxi fare - a hire car might be cheaper. NB. "Araf" should probably be translated as "stand on the brakes"). It's a big place, and you could probably fill a day's climbing there. Membership is easy, and there was no silly belay test when I joined. They also have a automatic belay machine.
2. There is a small bolted sandstone crag at Castell Coch (A470?) on the outskirts of Cardiff (this is the only climbing location that I've visited near Cardiff - there are doubtless others).
3. Head North, young man! Snowdonia National Park is a fantastic place. A lone climber could take solice in the classic scrambles of, say, Tryfan or Crib Goch. There are lots of great climbs if you can find a partner (there's a nice-looking VS on Cadair Idris that has my name on it... when I make it back one day...). NB. Wet weather (clothing, navigation, ...) is a non-trivial issue in this part of the world. Alternatively, the rolling hills of the Brecon Beacons National Park make for a (closer) good walk.
4. thebmc.co.uk will doubtless lead you to guides.
Other stuff for business geeks:
KLM fly into Cardiff from AMS (then about 20 GBP taxi to city). The Hilton is much better than the Marriott (good pool and gym in former, and view of castle if you ask nicely); both are central. I don't know St David's (at the bay), but it has plenty of stars and could be convenient if your business is that way. There are lots of places for good food: the Thai Garden opposite the stations; the swanky Italian place near the theatre (name long forgotten); the Rajput near the Marriott for "authentic British Indian" (more heavily marketed Thai/Indian places in the new old Brains Brewery location off St Marys (the main drag)). Live music/cabaret (in the vaudeville sense) in the hotel on St Marys whose name escapes me. Opera house at the bay may be showing something good, or there's St David's Hall in the centre, which also holds concerts.
Cardiff is a great city, and Wales is a beautiful land. But please remember that you are not in England! GF lived there for a while:
Passing stranger, in lilting welsh accent: Excuse me, do you know Curmudgeon Street?
GF: I'm sorry, I'm not from England.
PS: Don't you worry, love, neither am I.
Do remember to buy your special someone a traditional luuurve spoon!
Feel free to drop me email if you have other questions - I'm not a local, but I've spent months living out of a suitcase in Caerdydd.
Martin (I do like Wales, but I'm actually glad my parents went with the "i").

I'd love to, but it doesn't look doable in a day.

I'm at the St David's. I think my meetings are a little closer to the Hilton, but not greatly so, and the St David's is more stars yet a couple of quid cheaper.

I've never been to England before, so, not a problem!

mappy.co.uk reckons 200 miles/4h for Cardiff-Beddgelert. If you can skip out on Friday evening, you could have a full day out, and be back in Cardiff for bedtime Saturday before a Sunday return flight.
Other thoughts: Read "Feeding the rat" (if you haven't already) and make the pilgrimage to Llanberris. And Pembrokeshire sea cliffs. Mmmmm.

Get across to the Gower Peninsula. A quick train to Swansea the a bus. A few outdoor centres there so you could arrange for an instructor to pick you up from the railway station in Swansea. Time to Swansea on train less than an hour (just).
Some pics to whet your appetite...
