New device proposal for mountaineering groups/individuals to combine
gps mapping technology with mobile phone and heart monitoring
technology. That includes emergency transition capabilities that
include gps location. You responses upon this proposal would be greatly
appreciated please contact Bluemidjet@hotmail.com with you opinions!
Thank you for your time!

The idea of usenet is not that you request emails but that you
stay or keep coming back to take part in an on-line conversation.

a) Nick's suggestion is echoed. However your request for
feedback is also well taken.

b) IIRC what you are proposing may already exist except for
the heart monitoring part.

I own a Garmin Rino which is a GMRS two-way radio and GPS
receiver.

I think I've see advertised a cell phone/GPS reciever
advertised. It is marketed as something to get your around
city streets, but a simple software change could make it
good in the wild.

caveat: cell phone technology tends to work better in the
mountains here in the east and the valleys have trouble
with signal. Out west I understand that cell phone tech
is not very good in the moutains.

IMO, heart monitors are a dime a dozen and most who go
in the wilderness don't use them, so let those who *fear*
going away from "civilized" services buy the item which
panders to their fear.

Now if you want something that might actually be useful,
combine a GOOD GPS with a Satellite Phone which works
anywhere.

Sat phone technology is expensive now, but the more devices
that are out there using it, the more the price will come
down (computers, LED lighting). I foresee the day when
cell phone technology is supplanted by sat phone technology
anyway. To hasten the process, get more devices out there
which use the technology. Cell phone technology, while
getting better with the likes of GSM technology is still
quite limited.

What I suggest won't be cheap, but it will be useful and
will help the cost of certain technologies come down.

GPS, except for the receivers, is free, but it's not
really, it is vital to the military and so your tax
dollars pay for it.

That's news to me.
And I think if Ellis was alive, he'd say the same thing.

Properly implemented, a news software system gives a person the choice
to post a broadcast article or email a note.
We have a slew of header field options which control all that.

I see, you have a CellPhone, so that if you fall and break your neck,
the lack of Heartbeat, triggers a call to the local SAR Group, and
gives them your GPS based location, so they can come extract your
remains, so your wife/mother/children can have a body to come visit,
after your buried/cremated/shot into space.

Now there is a nice concept......

Something like that was my first thought. I'd prefer just a simple
emergency beacon signaler. If you feel a need for the rest of that
stuff (except maybe the GPS, 'cause it's a cool toy and can be
useful), then I feel that it's a 50 / 50 chance you shouldn't get very
far away from civilization in the first place.

I thought all cells nowdays had a GPS included. Can only be read from
the emergency responders, so it's not helpful to the person with the
cell, unless they really need an emergency crew out there. That's if
the cell can transmit to a tower in reach. Never had a place I
camped, canoed, fished, etc. but one that I could put a cell call
through from. My husband thought it would be good for emergencies.
Not most of where I went / might still go. I let the whole thing
lapse.

Anyone very worried about their safety / health should have an
emergency beacon and / or at least a sat phone. Cells suck for
outdoors people too much of the time. When sat phones come down in
price I'll be on them like turkey buzzards on a dead deer.

Absolutely. All these so-called adults who can't stand
to let go of Momma's apron strings.

Better yet, just stay home and play video games.

Once we have GPS, 2-way radio, cell phone, satellite phone, compass,
altimeter, digital camera, laser ranger, rescue beacon, avalanche beacon,
heart rate monitor, mp3 player and wireless PDA (so as to post to
rec.climbing while on the route) all in one box, we'll be all set...

But then your boss will be able to tell in one phone call that you are not
in bed with the flu, but enjoying the 5th pitch of some outback climb and
how cute your new partner is...

Thuraya SO-2510, about =A3500 and scratchcards for =A3110 at 160 units.
Works a treat in "Thuruya land" as long as you can see the sky and the
weather is not truly inclement.
Try calling non-Thuruya satphones and your scratchcard life is in
the low minutes dependant on where from and where to.
As for a heart monitor, I would not waste my money if I suffered
from long or short QT. I would be dead and gone when help arrived if I
was in the mountains.

'fraid I'm going to throw cold water on your proposal. Most of what
you describe already exists and is available. The emergency capability
is called a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) and has been available for a
couple of years. The biggest disadvantage is the cost, if you want to
own one you will pay upwards of $500 most likely. You can rent them
from REI now however. You register it to your name (or the name of the
rental company who then keeps track of who rents) and if you activate
it a search starts.

These are satellite based and come in two versions, one GPS based and
one not. In either case the satellite technology can locate you rather
quickly. Of course the GPS based units are more accurate (assuming it
can get a good reading) but even the non-gps version will be accurate
enough that searchers will almost certainly find you quickly. The
non-gps version uses differential time of signal arrival at different
satellites to pinpoint your location.

Of course if you really want to be in that business you can try to make
and market your own PLB. It would be nice if you could drive the price
down but be aware that you are competing with some established
companies and that can be a tough row to hoe. Of course you could add
your own bells and whistles if you want but I seriously doubt most
backcountry travelers would have any interest in a heart monitor.

If you want to discuss this further, I happen to be in the business of
consulting on decision-making. (For a fee) I will be glad to help you.
See hfl-llc.com, but be aware that that web site is under construction
and though the information is OK, the photo is not. Of course the
validity of my information does not depend on how good looking I am
(I'd be in trouble if it did).

As has been mentioned cell phones rarely get a signal in the backcountry.

.... and if you send email with your "opinion", you will probably end
up spending several hours over the rest of your lifetime deleting
messages from this guy, if the behavior of many businesses is any
guide. :-(

One might wonder if the guy offering this device has ever done any
rock climbing - can you imagine your belayer calling you on the
mobile phone to warn you that your heart rate is dropping as you
stand there trying to get some protection in?

That one should be good for a whole series of cartoons.

Reminds me of a friend who forgot to turn his cellphone off while out elk
