Gore-Tex + Windstopper? | | Bergsteiger beim Bergsteigen | 01.02.05 11:50 Uhr |

First I would like to apologize that I write in English but my written German is poor. Nevertheless I have no problems if you answer me in German.
I am planning to buy a Softshell with a Gore Windstopper or other windproof membrane (Vaude Windproof 100?) and to use mainly this as a top layer on mountain trails. However in rain or heavy snowing I still will need my Gore-Tex jacket. My question is how good is the combination of Gore Windstopper (for example) and Gore-Tex XCR? Is it breathable enough? Or will be better to stick to a normal fleece jacket instead of a Softshell?
Thanks. Dimi

Ok, dann brauche ich ja nicht mein radebrechendes Englisch rausholen ;-) > I am planning to buy a Softshell with a Gore Windstopper or other windproof > membrane (Vaude Windproof 100?) and to use mainly this as a top layer on > mountain trails.

My personal view and experience:
If it is really cold and possibly windy or snowing, the combination of windstopper (Mammut Seal Jacket) and gore (Mammut Lhotse Jacket) works for me.
If it is cold and windy in most cases for the ascent the windstopper is enough.
If it is snowing or raining and not so cold, the gore together with some underwear is warm enough so the windstopper would not reduce breathability.
Bottomline - I would not trade my windstopper for a normal fleece, but I think the newer softshell jackets might be overkill.

Hi,
I think the usability of your combination strongly depends on the temperature outside. I have made quite negative experiences with a windstopping fleece and a membrane as outer shell at ~10°C and heavy rain, but using it in colder conditions I encountered no probs.
